Two Key Economic Reports Every Investor or Trader Should Know

There are two economic reports that came out this week, which have the Bulls and the Bears playing tug of war on directional bias. These reports are key in gauging inflation and based on their numbers they could signal what the Fed will do with interest rates.

The CPI and PPI

CPI – Consumer Price Index: The CPI measures the average change over time in prices paid by consumers for things like food, housing, healthcare, etc. It tracks Inflation.

The CPI reflects the cost of living. It shows whether everyday expenses are rising or falling.

PPI – Producer Price Index: The PPI measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers. It’s considered a leading indicator of inflation because it tracks prices before they reach consumers.

What the CPI and PPI Indicate

CPI

CPI is applied to calculate cost of living adjustments (COLAs) by adjusting revenue and expense sources and the PPI is often used to calculate real growth by adjusting revenue sources for inflation.

  • It helps policymakers and economists assess inflation trends
  • Influences interest rate decisions and monetary policy
  • Used to calculate cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs)

PPI

  • Considered a leading indicator of consumer inflation
  • It helps businesses anticipate cost changes and adjust their pricing strategies
  • Used to deflate revenue figures for real growth analysis

To Sum Up What CPI and PPI Mean for the Markets

Policymakers and investors watch it closely to anticipate inflation trends. Below is a breakdown of CPI vs PPI.
